On September 7, 2026, the French Church du Saint-Esprit gathered for its annual bilingual service in memory of Elias Neau (1662–1722) and the first Africans baptized in the Anglican Church in New York.
A French Huguenot refugee, Neau endured years of imprisonment and forced labor in the galleys of Marseille before returning to New York, where he established the city’s first school dedicated to educating enslaved Africans and the poor.
The service began at Trinity Churchyard, near Neau’s grave, with prayers, readings, and remembrance of his life, faith, and ministry. Participants then walked to the African Burial Ground to honor the enslaved Africans buried there.
Through this annual commemoration, we remember Elias Neau’s remarkable faith and resilience and honor the first Africans baptized in the Anglican Church in New York, whose lives and faith form an important part of the history of the Church and of the city.

Le 7 septembre 2026, l’Église française du Saint-Esprit s’est réunie pour son service annuel bilingue en mémoire d’Elias Neau (1662–1722) et des premiers Africains baptisés dans l’Église anglicane à New York.
Réfugié huguenot français, Neau passa plusieurs années dans les galères et les cachots de Marseille avant de retourner à New York, où il fonda la première école de la ville destinée aux Africains réduits en esclavage et aux pauvres.
Le service a commencé au cimetière de Trinity Church, près de la tombe de Neau, avec des prières, des lectures et un temps de mémoire. Les participants se sont ensuite rendus à l’African Burial Ground afin d’honorer les Africains réduits en esclavage qui y reposent.
Par cette commémoration annuelle, nous nous souvenons de la foi et de la résilience remarquables d’Elias Neau et honorons les premiers Africains baptisés dans l’Église anglicane à New York, dont la vie et la foi constituent une part importante de l’histoire de l’Église et de la ville.
